Former Nigerian Vice President and 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Atiku Abubakar has paid tribute to the late veteran actress, journalist and singer Onyeka Onwenu.
In a social media post on Wednesday, July 31, Atiku expressed sadness at the death of the "multi-talented woman" whose impact and works would "stand the test of time."
Onyeka Onwenu passed away on Tuesday, July 30, at the age of 72 after collapsing following a performance at a birthday party in Lagos.
Her death has prompted an outpouring of grief and remembrance for the pioneering figure in Nigerian music and films.
In his tribute, Atiku said: "Onyeka was a transformational journalist whose works, such as the documentary 'Nigeria: The Squandering of Riches,' are timeless. Her musical prowess led to multiple hits, which will continue to resonate long after her exit."
"May God grant her family the fortitude to bear her departure," Atiku added.
Onyeka Onwenu had a storied career spanning over four decades and breaking barriers as one of the first female artists in Nigeria's music industry.
She won accolades for albums blending genres and for using her talent to highlight social issues.
Her starring roles in Nollywood, including for which she earned an AMAA award, also cemented her status as a pioneer.
Onwenu held several leadership positions and received national honours for her immense contributions.
