When we started acting, there was no social media — Patience Ozokwor recounts

Nollywood veteran actress Patience Ozokwor, popularly known as Mama G has reflected on the massive changes that have occurred in the film industry since she began her career many years ago.

In a statement on Instagram after winning the African Magic Viewers Choice Lifetime Achievement Award on Saturday, Ozokwor said "When we started in the industry, there was no social media and so many other luxuries we enjoy now.

"Progress was completely dependent on your talent, humility, word of mouth and trust."

She noted that in the early days of Nollywood, actors and filmmakers had to work hard through showcasing their talent to progress their careers.

Social media platforms and other technologies that aid publicity today did not exist.

The veteran actress credited her colleagues in the industry for working "tirelessly and often times without recognition."

She also expressed gratitude to her family for supporting her, saying "My children sacrificed a lot and stayed long periods without a mother."

Ozokwor, popularly known for playing strong mother roles in films, has been active in the Nigerian film industry for over three decades.

She has featured in over 200 movies and won multiple awards for her work.

The Lifetime Achievement Award she received at AMVCA 2023 honors her outstanding contribution to Nollywood and recognizes her as one of the industry's pioneering filmmakers.
