The Programmes Manager of Special Attention Project (SAP), a Ghanaian non-governmental organisation working for the rights of children with learning difficulties, has charged Muslim women not to neglect the educational needs of their children.

Mr. Richard O. Opoku said increasing access to education remains a vital for eradicating extreme poverty, adding that “education plays a critical role for children to realise their full potentials, become useful citizens and improve their living standards”.

Mr. Opoku gave the advice at the Back to School and Literacy Fair organised at the Kawukudi Part at Nima, Accra by the United Way Ghana.

The fair formed part of activities marking the International Literacy Day 2018 under the theme "Literacy and Skills Development".

About 200 Muslim parents and teachers who attended the event were sensitised on how to recognise and help children with learning difficulties to be able to learn.

Mr. Opoku asked the parents to desist from abandoning their children because of their inability to perform well academically in school, but exercise more patience and assist them to learn better.

“Children with learning difficulties need more attention from parents and teachers. They can be helped to learn better through patience and adequate assistance,’ he noted.

The Programmes Manager said learning difficulties in children in Ghana were mostly interpreted as laziness and spiritual problems, which was worrying, explaining that, some of the children only needed special attention and strategic teaching methods.

Mr. Opoku called on government to expedite the full implementation of the Inclusive Education Policy, which will improve the basic educational systems to meet the educational needs of all learners with special educational needs, including children with learning difficulties.
