
Additional 201 electoral areas are to be created in the Brong-Ahafo Region, Mr. Frank Nunoo, a Deputy Regional Director of the Electoral Commission (EC) announced on Thursday.
The total number of electoral areas after the creation of new ones will be 967 for both local and national elections
Currently, the region has 766 electoral areas in 29 districts and municipalities, and if created, the electoral areas are expected to take effect in the next District level Assembly Elections in 2019.
Speaking at a stakeholders meeting mainly attended by representatives from political parties and the media in Sunyani, Mr. Nunoo said the EC is engaging with key stakeholders such as the traditional authorities and district assemblies to determine the names for the new electoral areas.
He said the proposed new electoral areas would be submitted to Parliament, adding that there was also the possibility of re-aligning some of the electoral areas.
In a breakdown, Mr. Nunoo said four new areas were to be created in Asunafo South, Asunafo north-10, Asutifi South- eight, Asutifi North-13, Tano North-seven, Sunyani Municipal-five, Sunyani West—seven, Dormaa Municipal-10 and Dormaa West-five.
Dormaa East-five, Berekum-four, Jaman South-six, Banda-six, Tain-eight, Jaman North-four, Wenchi-10, Techiman-11, KIntampo North-11, Kintampo South-11, Nkoranza North-10, Nkoranza South-eight, Atebubu-Amantin-seven, Pru East-6, Pru West-seven, Sene East-six, Sene West-seven, and Techiman North-five.
No new electoral area would be created in Tano South Municipality.
On the proposed creation of the new Bono East and Ahafo Regions, Mr. Nunoo said the regional office of the commission had received Voter Management Systems (VMS) from the EC and deployed to areas where the referendum would be held in December.
Mr. Charles Damoah, also as Deputy Brong-Ahafo Regional Director of the EC said when created the new Bono East region is expected to comprise 16 districts and municipalities while Ahafo Region would have six districts and Municipalities.
He said a limited registration exercise would soon be open in the referendum areas to enable people who had attained 18 years to register and participate in the referendum, adding the exercise would be done online.
