Malawian Delegation Taps Into Ghana’s Waste Management Expertise

A delegation from Malawi visited Ghana last week to observe the country's waste management practices and interact with key stakeholders in the sector.

The delegation comprising members of the Blantyre City Council was headed by the city's mayor, Alfred Chanza.

This follows an earlier visit by a Ghanaian delegation to Malawi in 2017 to share the success story of the JVL Fortifier Compost Plant.

The group was mainly hosted by indigenous waste management company Jekora Ventures Limited over the course of six days.

During the period, they visited various waste management projects including the JVL Fortifier Compost Plant and the Kpone landfill site.

The delegation also paid a courtesy call on the Chief Executive of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly, Mohammed Adjei Sowah and the Tema Metropolitan Chief Executive, Felix Mensah Nii Anang-La.

Speaking to Citi News, Mayor of Blantyre City Alfred Chanza praised the current waste management system in Ghana and noted that the visit would enable both parties to learn best practices.

“What is happening here in Accra is also happening in other cities including Blantyre City in Malawi but if you go there you will find that there are some success stories and if you come here there are also success stories. So what we are trying to do is just learn from our colleagues from this side so we would be able to improve on our situation,” he said.

Managing Director of Jekora Ventures Limited, Immanuel Nartey-Tokoli also highlighted the need for government to support private waste management companies to enable its aim of making Accra the cleanest city in Africa.

According to him, the move would ultimately reduce the outbreak of diseases in Ghana.

“Because waste management, sanitation issues is a public good, we need the government also to come in to support. A healthy population is a healthy asset for the whole nation,” Nartey-Tokoli added.
