Accra, June 20, GNA - President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Tuesday swore-in the former Chief Justice, Mrs Georgina Theodora Wood, into the Council of State as the last of the 25-member council.
This is in accordance with Article 89 (2) of the 1992 Constitution, which establishes the Council of State to, requiring a former Chief Justice to be part of the Council.
President Akufo-Addo administered to Justice Georgina Wood the oaths of allegiance, secrecy, and that of membership to the Council.
She retired from office early this month as the first woman to have headed the Judiciary and the longest to have served in that capacity, during which she swore into office three Presidents.
President Akufo-Addo commended her for her unique contribution to the development of the country, expressing optimism that her experience would enrich the work of the council.
"I think that this is a body that will benefit considerably from your experience from all that you have been doing in your life, up till now.
'Myself and my government will cooperate with you fully. My doors are always open to you. I want us to work in a healthy and constructive manner and push forward the agenda of Ghana," he said.
Justice Wood on her part thanked President Akufo-Addo for the honour done her to serve on the council of State, assuring of her full cooperation and assistance in the service of the country.
"Mr President, I do recognise that largely, the constitutional role of the Council of State is consultative and excellent advisory. I have listened to you a number of times, spell out your goals for this country.
Mr President you can count on my loyalty to the people of Ghana and my modest contribution to the other members of the Council," she said.
She promised to serve the government and the country faithfully and work with her colleague members to improve the governance in the country.
The Chairman of the Council of State, Nana Otuo Siribuor, welcomed Justice Wood and thanked the President for strengthening the Council with her inclusion.
