An official letter from the Ministry of Education addressed to the National Council for Tertiary Education has indicated the upgrading of the Cape Coast Polytechnic to a Technical University.

The letter stated that the government’s pledge to upgrade the Polytechnics to a degree awarding Technical institutions has been enacted by parliament.

The Polytechnics were supposed to meet certain requirements to qualify for conversion as per the report of the Technical Committee for the Conversion of Polytechnics in Ghana to Technical Universities. Cape Coast Poly, which failed to make an appearance in the first set of upgraded technical universities, based on their facilities applied and appealed again to the government to reconsider their decision in upgrading the school.

As stated in the letter, Cape Coast Polytechnic is now a technical university which will offer degree courses.

Cape Coast Polytechnic was established in 1984 as a second cycle institution. In 1986, it operated under the administration of Ghana Education Service to offer intermediate courses leading to the award of non-tertiary certificates.

In 1992, the Polytechnic was upgraded to tertiary level by PNDCL 321 to run programmes for the award of the Higher National Diplomas. The new Polytechnic Act of 2007, Act 745 has given the Polytechnic the mandate to run degree programs.

Cape Coast Polytechnic is situated about 5km from the Pedu Traffic Lights off the main road linking Cape Coast and Twifu Praso.

Moreover, Tamale Polytechnic has also been upgraded, hence eight (8) upgraded Polytechnics.
