Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has cut sod for the construction of a modern conference hall at the Wa Naa Palace, marking the beginning of the first phase of a major initiative to upgrade the historic seat of the Wala Kingdom.
Speaking at the ceremony on Saturday, June 6, Bagbin said the project is intended to provide a dignified and functional meeting space for the Wa Naa and other traditional authorities.
“The idea behind the project we are commencing today is to have a befitting meeting place for the Wa Naa and other traditional authorities, to enable them conveniently host visitors and also have their own meetings,” he said.
Bagbin noted that progress on the initiative had been swift.
“Four months after the launch, we are breaking ground to commence the construction of the first phase. This should signal to all that we indeed mean business.”
He expressed optimism that the facility could be completed in time for the Dumba Festival, describing the project as a historic milestone.
“This is the second major facelift to this Palace since its construction over five centuries ago.”
Bagbin assured that the palace’s unique architectural identity would be preserved.
“The current construction will not demolish or vary the original Sudanese architecture.”
He also urged unity and cooperation among stakeholders, stressing that peace is essential for development.
“Conflict is the worst enemy of development.”
Jinpenhi Naa Kadir Ibrahim, speaking on behalf of the Overlord of the Waala Traditional Area, praised the project as another significant contribution by the Speaker toward the growth and modernisation of the traditional area.
“Today’s project further demonstrates his enduring commitment to preserving our heritage while promoting development.”
He added that Bagbin’s decision to personally fund the project reflects a leadership style rooted in service and tangible impact.
“By personally funding this ultramodern conference hall, Speaker Bagbin has once again shown that true leadership is measured not merely by words, but by tangible contributions to the welfare and advancement of society.”
