Rehabilitated Adomi Bridge Commissioned

President John Mahama last Saturday commissioned the rehabilitated Adomi Bridge at Atimpoku, the Asuogyaman district capital, in the Eastern Region.

In 2008 it was realized that some transverse girders of the bridge had developed deep cracks due to fatigue hence, the need for the rehabilitation.

The government in 2011 secured a €12.9 million credit facility from the Bank of Austria to facilitate the Adomi Bridge rehabilitation project.

The project was executed by Billfinger MCE GmBH of Australia, which is said to have cost the nation €13 million.

It is a two-hinged steel arch bridge with a deck suspended by cables. It was designed in 1956 and completed in 1957 by William Brown of the engineering firm, Freeman Fox & Partners. It has two pedestrian walkways on each side of the carriageway.

Addressing the gathering at a short ceremony, President Mahama said the bridge is “strong, it's firm and it will serve us for a very long time.”

According to him, the two ferries at Senchi had been decommissioned to be sent to Yeji and Dambai to augment the existing ones in ferrying travellers, adding that it would remove the difficulties which passengers had encountered in crossing the lake with ferries for almost one-and-a-half years.

The paramount chief of the Akwamu Traditional Council, Odeneho Kwafo Akoto III, who was the chairman of the event, tasked President Mahama to cause the deplorable roads in the area to be rehabilitated to enable the fisher folks and the farmers to send their fish and foodstuffs respectively to the markets for sale.
