Bolgatanga Girls SHS restores boarding status of student in alleged sexually abuse case

Bolgatanga Girls’ Senior High School (BOGISS) has restored the boarding status of the student at the centre of an alleged sexual abuse case involving two watchmen at the school.

The decision was communicated to the student’s parent in a letter dated August 20, 2026, signed by the Headmistress, Gifty Ayamba.

The letter said the school had reversed its earlier decision to place the student on day status for one academic year following a directive from the Ghana Education Service (GES).

“Upon a directive by the management of the Ghana Education Service, the recommendation to place your ward as day student for one (1) academic year has been reversed. Your ward's boarding status has been restored.”

The headmistress also apologised for any inconvenience caused.

“Any inconvenience caused is deeply regretted,” she said.

The restoration follows intervention by the Ministry of Education, which directed that the student’s boarding status be restored immediately.

The Ministry said the student could not be held responsible for the alleged abuse and directed the GES to investigate the incident and ensure that she received the necessary medical care and counselling.

The case attracted public concern after allegations that the student, reported to be 14 years old, had been sexually abused by two watchmen employed at the school.

The alleged incident also raised questions about the school’s handling of the student’s welfare after reports that her boarding status had been changed.

The Ministry of Education has described the alleged abuse as unacceptable, stressing the responsibility of schools to protect the safety, dignity and rights of students, particularly vulnerable children.

The GES has taken steps in relation to the matter, while investigations into the case continue.
