Embattled broadcaster and showbiz icon Kwasi Kyei Darkwah, popularly called KKD, who was dragged to court for allegedly raping a 19-year-old student, has apologised for his actions after the girl had dropped the rape charges against him.

In a rapid dramatic twist to the rape saga, KKD, in a letter dated January 12, 2014, apologised for the “ridicule and disgrace” brought by his actions.

'I, Kwasi Kyei Darkwah wish to make this public announcement that I truly and sincerely apologise for the public ridicule and disgrace that have ensued by reason of the fleeting pleasure of the flesh involving the complainant and myself,' he said.

In the statement signed and issued by the embattled CEO of the Finest Productions, he acknowledged that he had sinned and prayed to God for forgiveness.

He said, 'I acknowledge I have sinned and have prayed to my God for forgiveness for all that trauma that I have caused this young woman.'

KKD, according to the letter, also asked the media “to spare Ewureffe and our respective families any further agonies.”

The girl at the centre of the rape scandal was said to have stated that she was no longer interested in pursuing the case.

The complainant was reported to have written to the state which was prosecuting KKD for rape to convey her disinterest and desire to see the charges dropped.

According to sources, the two-page letter, dated January 12, 2014, was addressed to the Director of Public Prosecutions at the Attorney-General's (A-G's) Department and copied to the Chief Justice, the Registrar of the High Court and the Ghana Police Service.

“Tuesday morning she went to the Airport Police Station with her father where a copy of the said letter was served on the police,” the source further stated.

Media Frenzy
The complainant reportedly cited the 'media frenzy' that followed the arrest of KKD and the unceasing buzz and social media posts which she described as insensitive, for her decision.

She claimed she was unable to continue cooperating with the police who were prosecuting the case, stressing that since the story of her rape allegations against KKD broke, her life had taken a dramatic turn.

The victim further stated that she had not been able to appear in public without attracting hushed gossip and finger-pointing.

Drama
Earlier yesterday, there was drama at an Accra Human Rights Court when lawyers fighting for bail for KKD asked for in-camera hearing.

The State was due to file a response to a 30-paragraph motion on notice for bail pending trial filed by lawyers of the accused.

At the last adjourned date, Ms Cynthia Lamptey, the acting Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), told the court that the Attorney-General received the motion at about 4:00pm on the previous day and as a result needed some time to study the motion and file the appropriate response.

Surprisingly, at 9:55 am yesterday when the case came up for hearing, Anthony Forson Jnr, counsel for KKD, asked the court to go into chambers.

Though no reasons were ascribed for the in-camera hearing, Ms Lamptey and the other parties in the case moved into the judge's chambers, obviously at the displeasure of scores of journalists who had flooded the court.

The trial judge, Justice Kofi Essel Mensah, probably noticing the disappointment on the faces of the journalists in the court, said jokingly, 'Unfortunately, the reporters will not have anything to write…We are coming back on Thursday.'

KKD wanted to impress upon the court that the sex he had with the lady was consensual after the police charged him for rape and a Magistrate's Court subsequently denied him bail.

In the motion filed by his lawyers, Ampem Chambers, KKD said the footage he was relying on contained a scene of romantic kissing between the complainant and the accused.

The said CCTV, which reportedly captured KKD and his alleged rape victim walking majestically in and out of the hotel room, had since gone viral on social media.

'The complainant was captured by CCTV footage in the hotel romantically kissing the accused person before the alleged non-consensual sexual incident and most importantly after the alleged rape was said to have occurred the footage shows the accused and the complainant walking together from the hotel suite and through the hotel lobby in much the same manner as they entered the hotel suite,' he said in his affidavits in support.

KKD was arrested at the African Regent Hotel on December 27, last year and was detained by the Airport Police the same night.

The police subsequently arraigned him before an Adjabeng District Magistrate Court for the offence of rape.

His plea was not taken and the Magistrate, Adwoa Akyaamaa Ofosu, refused him bail by remanding him into police custody.

It is the case of the prosecution led by ACP Moses Atimbilla that KKD, aged 49, at about 9:00pm on December 27, 2014 at the African Regent Hotel in Accra, had carnal knowledge of the 19-year-old student (name withheld) without her consent in a bathroom.
