How Spiritual Are Gospel Music Shows?

How Spiritual Are Gospel Music Shows?
26.09.2014 LISTEN

The hall was packed to capacity as I got a seat in front of two ladies. All wore miniskirt, too short for my comfort. The attire in the show varied from miniskirts to skin jeans, not to mention those body mapping leggings. Bare backs were strewn all over the room. Most men were young, red eyed and smelling alcohol. I brought my Bible with me, hopping to read any quoted passages. The main artist did not show up till all people had taken their seats. Curtain raisers kicked off the show, they were picked from the “and many more” list of performers. I forgot to mention that this was a Gospel Phuuuungweeee!

To my surprise, though the show was opened with a word of prayer, there was no preaching of the Word of god because the “fans”shouted down the preacher who stood up to preach. People screamed that their money was paid so that they can enjoy themselves and nobody should rob them that maximum entertainment. The organizers complied and the show exploded. The Deafening screams echoed through the night as crazed dancers demanded songs of their choice. When the main star of the night took to the stage, it was already past midnight. The ululation, whistling and screaming was unbearable. Though the show was supposed to run the whole night through, I left midway.

A friend who stayed till they closed, told me about nasty things that took place that night. He told me that sometime during the night two fights had broken out. He also told me that some familiar faces disappeared in pairs during the night and started re appearing close to dawn. Condom covers and their used contents strewn in hedges outside the hall could not be clearly explained. I thanked God I didn't stay that long. I don't mean to implicate anybody here. I am just wondering whether these are spiritual or social functions.

The artists and the organizers are to blame for this disgrace. They compose songs that have no impact on the audience. People come to these shows so that they dance to these dance-able songs and not to listen to the message in the song. The only thing that differentiates these songs with the so called secular ones is the name
