The District Grand Lodge of Ghana has presented a cheque for GH¢20,000 to the Methodist University College of Ghana (MUCG) for the establishment of a Chair of Mathematics in honour of the late Dr James Villiers Legge Phillips.
The late Dr J.V.L. Phillips, affectionately known as 'Uncle Jimmy,' was a founder member of the MUCG and the Past Right Worshipful Grand Master of the District Lodge of Ghana, English Constitution.
A Chair is established by universities to meet their needs for academic leadership and study in a specific area of discipline.
Declaring the purpose of the Fund, the Grand Master of the group, Mr Kow Abaka Quansah, said the setting up of the fund would enhance academic work in the Mathematics Department of the university and also help the department retain and maintain talented staff at the faculty to carry out useful research.
He prayed that the university would continue to receive assistance from charitable individuals and organisations so as to fulfil the ambitions of the founding fathers.
The Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church of Ghana, Most Rev. Emmanuel Asante, who received the cheque on behalf of the university, thanked the group for the money and charged others to emulate its example.
According to Most Rev. Asante, he first came into contact with the late J.V.L. Phillips when he became a chaplain at the Ridge Church. He lauded him for 'his sense of commitment, humour and humility.'
The Principal of the MUCG, Rev. Prof. Samuel Kwasi Adjepong, was grateful for the philanthropic gesture and said the global environment had made it crucial for the university to widen its horizon in conducting research in mathematics.
Present at the ceremony were some leading members of the group, some relatives of the late J.V.L. Phillips and the SRC President of the Methodist University College.
