Chief Justice Georgina Theodora Wood left Accra on Sunday, September 22, 2013 to attend the maiden Global Law Deans' Forum in Singapore at the invitation of the International Association of Law Schools. The programme starts from September 25 - 27, 2013.
At the forum, the CJ would join a panel of eminent judges to discuss the nexus between the Judiciary and legal education during which she will provide useful insights from an African perspective.
The panel will be chaired by Judge Diarmuid O'Scannlain, Judge on the US Federal Circuit Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.
Judge O'Scannlain chairs the International Judicial Relations Committee of the Judicial Conference of the US Federal Courts, which is the administrative body overseeing all the federal courts in the United States.
The other members of the panel will be Judge John Hedigan of the High Court of Ireland, who previously served on the European Court of Human Rights, and also Judge Daqun Liu, a Judge on the Appeals Panel of the International Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia and Rwanda.
The International Association of Law Schools previously sponsored a series of Regional Law Deans' Forums bringing together member and non-member Law School Deans from each of the four regions it serves (Africa, the Americas, Asia and Europe) to discuss matters significant to law school leaders.
While in Singapore, Chief Justice Wood will also meet with the Chief Justice of Singapore, Sundaresh Menon, to acquaint herself with the legal system of that country, a statement issued and signed by Justice Alex B. Poku-Acheampong, Judicial Secretary said.
