The Vice-President, Mr Kwesi Bekoe Amissah-Arthur, last Saturday visited the Kwaprow community near the University of Cape Coast to inspect progress of work on the dredging of the Kakum River.
He also interacted with the chiefs and people of the community, thanked them for voting for the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the last December general election, and gave the assurance that the NDC would never let them down.
The visit was a sequel to a similar one he made last year during which he sympathised with the people as a result of flooding in the area, which destroyed houses and properties.
The Vice-President donated relief items to the people and announced the setting up of a committee, chaired by Professor Peter Acheampong, Chairman of the Kwaprow Residents Association and lecturer in Geography at the University of Cape Coast, to oversee the dredging of the Kakum River.
The Kakum River periodically overflows its banks and floods the Kwaprow area when the Brimso Dam is spilled.
Vice-President Amissah-Arthur said development was about ensuring continuity of projects, and cautioned against acts that would destroy the efforts made so far in finding a lasting solution to the perennial flooding, as well as the reported cases of illegal sand winning in the area.
He expressed his appreciation to the Acheampong Committee for the work done so far.
Mr Ebo Barton Odro, MP for Cape Coast, warned against illegal sand winning in the area and added that culprits would be made to face the law.
Prof. Acheampong briefed the Vice-President on the progress of work and appealed for more support, especially fuel for the equipment being used for the work.
Nana Kwesi Mensah II, Chief of Kwaprow, paid tribute to the late President John Evans Atta Mills for his efforts in supporting the development agenda of Kwaprow, adding that he was convinced the current President, John Dramani Mahama and his vice would keep the Kwaprow community and its development in mind and continue to lend their support.
Nana Mensah also appealed to the government to improve the road network in the Kwaprow community.
In the Vice-President's delegation were Madam Ama Benyiwa Doe and Dr Yaw Kuranchie, both Members of the Council of State.
