Seek Redress In Court—EC Tells NPP

Chairman of the Peace Council, Most Rev. Dr. Emmanuel Asante has confirmed that the Electoral Commission (E.C) and the two main political parties, National Democratic Congress (NDC) and New Patriotic Party (NPP) have agreed that any party that feels aggrieved about the results of the election, should resort to the courts for redress.

The pronouncement follows several complaints lodged by the leadership of the NPP prior to the E.C's announcement of the results.

According to the NPP, the President has been conspiring with officials of the EC to "falsify election results."

The two parties, the Peace Council, the E.C and other stakeholders were engaged in a closed door meeting for over an hour prior to the announcement of the results of the elections.

In an interview with Citi News, Most Rev. Dr. Emmanuel Asante said all parties were satisfied with the outcome of the meeting.

“The meeting was very successful. The peace council facilitated the meeting between the NPP, NDC and the EC. The NPP had the chance to present their case. We adjourned the meeting and the EC took the evidence they [NPP] submitted and after over two hours of deliberations in the caucus, they came back and said they needed more evidence to be able to arrive at a conclusion,” he stated.

“The agreement was that the EC would announce the winner whiles the NPP can seek the proper redress through the channels laid down as they produce further evidence to facilitate that,” he added.

He appealed to all Ghanaians and politicians not to incite violence after the declaration of the results.

“We appeal to all Ghanaians to not take the law into our hands as the results have been released. Be it in rejoicing or in losing. Let us do all we can to maintain the peace of Ghana. As we seek justice through the proper channels, let there be peace in the country”.
