Allied Air Crash Victims To Receive Compensation

Lawyers for Allied Air, owners of the cargo plane which crash-landed at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) in Accra and slammed into a mini-bus near the El-Wak Stadium in June, this year, say they have received claims for compensation of those who lost their lives in the accident.

Speaking to graphic.com.gh, Mr James Quarshie-Idun, lawyer for the airline, said the claims were received on behalf of the airline and were being processed to determine the payment of appropriate compensation to the victims.

He, however, did not elaborate on how many claims had been received and the quantum of money being claimed, saying those were private issues.

Ten people were killed when the Boeing 727-200 cargo plane, which had taken off from Lagos, Nigeria, and was carrying general goods to Cote d’Ivoire via Accra, when the incident occurred at about 7.10 p.m. on Saturday, June 2, 2012.

The aircraft overshot the runway on landing and went through the airport perimeter fence before crashing into the Benz bus, with registration GE 5471 Z, on the 37 Military Hospital-Burma Camp road, instantly killing all 10 passengers, including the driver.

Two other people who were in a taxi which had been grazed by the aircraft on the El-Wak-Burma Camp road, however, escaped unhurt while all the four crew members of the aircraft survived the accident.

The conical front of the cargo aircraft was completely destroyed, the wings partly damaged, the giant tyres which had been released in readiness for landing also dislodged, while other parts of the plane and the vehicle were scattered all over.

Following the accident, a committee was set up to look into circumstances that led to the plane crash and the committee’s preliminary report has since been presented to the Ministry of Transport.
