The late President John Evans Atta MillsPresident John Evans Atta Mills is dead
He died at the 37 Military Hospital In Accra Tuesday, hours after being suddenly taken ill.
He was 68.
A statement signed by the Chief of Staff, Mr Henry Martey Newman, issued in Accra, said, 'It is with heavy heart and deep sorrow that we announce the sudden and untimely death of the President of the Republic of Ghana, His Excellency President John Evan Atta Mills.
It said the death ocurred at the 37 Military Hospital this afternoon while he was receiving medical attention after being taken ill a few hours earlier.
The statement announced that the Vice-President, Mr John Dramani Mahama, will broadcast to the nation in due course.
A source told graphic.com.gh that the President was taken to the hospital in an ambulance about 1.30 pm and was hurriedly wheeled into the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
It said President Mills was lying on a stretcher and was vitually covered with linen, except for his hands.
'Moments later, another car pulled to a stop and Mrs Naadu Mills hurriedly came out and entered the ICU.
According to the source, about an hour later, she came out looking so morose, hit her chest and exclaimed, Jesus.
