Flashback: a woman fleeing the Hohoe violence The Gbi Traditional Council in Hohoe in the Volta Region has softened its stance on a 48 hour ultimatum given to Muslim youth to return regalia that was taken away from the palace of Palace of Tobge Gaabusu or face the consequences.
The decision follows intervention from stakeholders including, the Regional Security Council, the National Chief Imam as well as the presidency.
The Gbi Traditional Council issued the ultimatum on Wednesday following attack by angry Muslim youth on the Palace of Tobge Gaabusu.
The youth destroyed property belonging to Togbe Gaabusu and were alleged to have taken away regalia from the Palace.
They were protesting the exhumation of their Imam who was buried, Sunday.
Loyalists of Togbe Gaabusu in retaliation burnt shops and houses owned by Muslims. Two people were confirmed dead, with several others displaced in the ensuing clashes, leading to the imposition of a dusk-to-dawn curfew.
Peace brokers including the National Chief Imam, the Regional Security Council as well as the GOC of the Southern Command Brig General Martin Ahiaglo went to Hohoe to intervene but that did not stop the Gbi Traditional Council from issuing the ultimatum for the return of the regalia.
With the deadline inching close, the few Muslim residents in Hohoe are afraid of attack despite the security presence in the area.
After a meeting by the Gbi Traditional Council, Friday, the council has rescinded its ultimatum it issued against the Muslims.
Togbe Gaabusu is expected to go round the streets of Hohoe to ascertain the extent of damage in the Municipality.
