
Accra, Jan. 13, GNA – President John Evans Atta Mills, in consultation with the Council of State, has confirmed the Acting Director-General of Prisons, Mr Michael Kofi Bansah as the Director-General of Prisons.
This was contained in a statement dated January 5, 2012 and signed by Mr J.K. Bebaako Mensah, Secretary to the President.
A statement issued by Assistant Superintendent of Prisons (ASP) Courage Atsem, Chief Public Relations Officer of Ghana Prisons, copied to Ghana News Agency in Accra said Mr Bansah, until his appointment as the Acting Director-General of Prisons was the Director of Prisons in-charge of Operations.
Mr Bansah, a product of University of Ghana, Legon with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Sociology in 1979 as well as a Post-Graduate Diploma in Adult Education in 1985, has served with the Ghana Prisons Service for over 31 years.
Commissioned as an Assistant Superintendent of Prisons on September 1, 1980, Mr Bansah has held various positions and appointments including Second-in-Command of the Medium Security Prison at Nsawam, Officer-in-Charge of James Camp, Ekuasi Camp and Kpando Local Prisons, Volta Regional Commander and Officer-in-charge of Ho Central Prison, and Commandant of the Prison Officers Training School.
He attended various courses including Pre Commission Training SSC/QM at the Ghana Military Academy, Chief Executive Programme, Strategic Management Course, Executive Programme on Good and Corporate Governance all at GIMPA.
Others are; New Approaches to Management of Prisons in the 21st Century at Galilee College Israel, Management of Prison Support Programmes in Peace Operations at the International Peace Support Training Centre, Nairobi, Kenya.
Mr Bansah who is also a member of the International Corrections and Prisons Association (ICAP) and the American Correction Association (ACA), served in the United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) as Advisor/Mentor in the Monrovia Central Prison and Greenville Prison.
