Sunyani, July 11, GNA – The Electoral Commission on Monday commended the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for holding a peaceful and successful election at the weekend.
More than 3,000 delegates of the NDC at a special delegates' congress in Sunyani endorsed President John Evans Atta Mills as the party's flagbearer for the 2012 elections.
The President obtained 2,717 votes representing 96.9 per cent out of the total valid votes cast to beat his only contestant, Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings, former first lady, who obtained 90 votes.
Mr. George Gyabaah, Brong-Ahafo Regional Director of the EC, who made the commendation in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), thanked the delegates and supporters of the NDC for their comportment and tolerance before, during and after the elections.
The regional director commended Nana Konadu and her supporters for the trust and confidence they had in the EC and for conceding defeat.
Mr. Gyabaah advised other political parties to emulate the NDC and NPP at their delegates' congresses to consolidate the country's fledgling democracy.
