Madina Police Command sees reduction in accident statistics

December 24, 2010 Accra, Dec. 24, GNA - The Madina Divisional Commander of the Motor Traffic Transport Unit(MTTU), Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Charles Ahiamale, says it has seen a significant reduction in the accidents in the area this year.

He said the Command registered 129 accidents involving 73 commercial vehicles, 80 private cars and seven motorbikes recording seven deaths.

ASP Ahiamale said in 2010, 52 passengers sustained serious injuries while 83 sustained minor injuries.

This compares with 153 accidents recorded in 2009 involving 225 vehicles with 12 deaths and 64 seriously injured persons.

He said 139 drivers in the Madina Command appeared before the Accra Motor Traffic Court for various traffic offences in 2010.

ASP Ahiamale said between October and December this year, 51 drivers were arraigned at the Madina Court and fined GH¢3,780 while fines totalling GH¢9,370.00 were collected from offending drivers during the year.

He advised drivers to avoid speeding, wrong overtaking and consumption of alcohol during the Christmas and New Year.

ASP Ahiamale warned vehicle owners to desist from giving their vehicles to unlicensed drivers.
