RLG Communications is targeting the Ashanti region as a key market to secure a 60 percent share of total mobile phone sales and distribution in the country by end of year.

The company has set itself an ambitious target to sell over five million phones over the period, in a bid to limit the influx of foreign brands.

Chief Executive Officer, Roland Agambire, is confident the drive to position the locally-assembled mobile phones in the hands of Ghanaian consumers will create jobs and enhance economic growth.

He spoke to Luv Fm at the regional launch of rLG mobile phones in Kumasi. “This is a region that is well populated and has one of the largest mobile phone usage in the country and they have the numbers that we know when we penetrate the market, then we have almost half of the population in the country.

“Because you can see the number of mobile phone users is clocking over ten million, so 60 percent is a good number and that's the drive. We expect that if by the end of 2010 we are able to sell about five million that would be impressive for the company and the country because the revenue stays in the economy”, Mr. Agambire noted.

The company is also launching its nation-wide recruitment drive to engage over six thousand youth under the ICT model of the National Youth Employment Programme (NYEP).
