Bafana Bafana striker has described his return to the national team as a “fresh start.”

The Blackburn Rovers striker is part of the squad that is preparing for Saturday's international friendly against Japan at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.

He spoke openly about his return to the Rand Stadium earlier today.

“I want to start afresh and help Bafana Bafana to do well in the World Cup Finals. I also have watched every match this year.

“All that was lacking in the squad was experience and somebody like me to stick the ball at the back of the net,” McCarthy told the press.

The Cape Town-born striker also revealed that he was in constant contact with former coach, Joel Santana, contrary to popular belief that he was not in the plans of the Brazilian.

“I was not playing regularly for Rovers so I thought that was the reason why Santana dropped me; but the strange thing is that Santana will phone and chat to me on a regular basis.

“Maybe it was because I speak Portuguese, but he never explained why he dropped me from the squad,” McCarthy stressed.

South Africa's leading scorer of all-time promised some goals on Saturday, saying, “I need only one touch to score and I will show the country that I am still the best.”
