Afriqiyah airways expands routes

By Daily Guide

AFRIQIYAH AIRWAYS, a Libyan airline, has noted it will be expanding its international routes this summer to some four destinations within Africa and Asia.

Speaking Tuesday in Accra at a meeting with air travel agents, Abdul Aziz Sharada, Country Manager of Afriqiyah, said the airline would expand to Brazaville (Congo), Johannesburg (South Africa), Manila (Philippines) and Beijing (China).

According to him, Afriqiyah, a strictly anti-smoking carrier, is poised to connect Africa to the rest of the world with its affordable, highly-competitive fares and dedicated services.

With the launching of new routes therefore, Mr Sharada said the airline, which boasts of 9 aircraft, will operate 4-day weekly flights from Accra to both African and European destinations. It plans reaching across to the USA in 2010.

He added that missing baggage compensation has improved within the last 15 months especially with the acquisition of 2 Boeing 757 aircraft.

Already, Afriqiyah undertakes international scheduled services to over 20 destinations in Africa, Europe and the Middle East. Its main base is the Tripoli International Airport.

Some European destinations covered by the airline include Amsterdam, Brussels, Dusseldorf, London, Rome, France and Geneva.

On the African continent, the airline operates in Tripoli, Benghazi, Niamey, Cairo, N'djamena, Khartoum, Bangui, Douala, Lagos, Ouagadougou and Bamako while other destinations are Accra, Lome, Cotonou and Abidjan.

The name Afriqiyah comes from the Arabic word for Africa and the 9.9.99 logo on the side of Afriqiyah's airplanes refers to the date of the Sirte Declaration which marked the formation of the African Union. This idea was for Afriqiyah to be the “airline of Africa” with its hub in Tripoli.

Afriqiyah is a member of the Arab Air Carriers Organization and the International Air Transport Association.

The airline targeted to carry 655,000 passengers last year and is poised to carry 1 million passengers by the end of 2009.

Passengers aboard the aircraft stand to derive a lot of benefits this summer and beyond given the mouth-watering incentives put in place for them.

From May to December this year, the airline has put a promotional package in place for people who purchase tickets. The final five winners will each receive tickets to the 2010 World Cup Tournament in South Africa with $500 free spending money.
