By GNA

Mr Kwadwo Baah-Wiredu, Minister for Finance and Economic Planning at the weekend, announced that Government had so far spent 160 million Ghana Cedis to provide new structures and rehabilitate old ones at the Oda Senior High School.

He said the objective, was to upgrade the school to the level of a model school, so that citizens within the Akyem Oda Municipality and its environs would have access to state of the art education facilities.

Speaking at the school's 46th Speech and Prize Giving Day, Mr Baah-Wiredu urged the students to reciprocate the gesture by devoting their time and attentions to their studies to enable them to pass their examinations with ease.

He said the introduction of the Capitation Grant and the Feeding Programme in basic schools, showed government's commitment to making education accessible and affordable.

Mr Baah-Wiredu, therefore, urged Ghanaians to honour their tax obligations promptly, adding that government could only do more, 'if we citizens also pay our taxes.'

He reminded teachers of the greater role they were expected to play, in making the new education reform successful and challenged them to make their lessons delivery 'student centered and student friendly' through effective preparation.

Mr Baah-Wiredu commended the role being played by Religious Bodies in setting up universities and other higher educational institutions.

He, however, called on them to move away from the over concentration of programmes in the humanities and to initiate science and technology programmes, to be able to produce graduates who would carry the nation to 'the new era of socio-economic growth.'

Mr David Afosah-Anim, headmaster of the school, in a welcoming address, express his gratitude to the government for including the school in the first 33 schools that had been upgraded to the status of a model school resulting in the provision of new structures in the school.

He however appealed to Government to provide the school with a bus to convey staff and students in town to school and on educational trips. Again he appealed for furniture for their computer laboratory and also the tarring of roads in the school.
