Six Prostitutes Fined In Kumasi

A KUMASI Circuit Court has fined six prostitutes GH¢150 each.
The six were among 11 women who were arrested on Monday, January 21 by the police in Kumasi on suspicion of practicing prostitution at various locations in the metropolis.

The convicts who pleaded guilty to charges of prostitution are Ama Serwaa, 23; Abena Frema, 23; Rukaya Mankubasi, 28; Elizabeth Konadu, 37; Akua Mother, 19; and Akosua Serwaa, 33.

One of the suspects, Adwoa Yeboah pleaded not guilty and would re-appear in court at a later date whilst three others who were previously given police enquiry bails have jumped their bails.

The police in Kumasi rounded them up in a move to put an end to the illegal activity which is gaining grounds in the metropolis.

The exercise also formed part of measures the police are taking to prevent the prostitutes from giving foreigners who are in the country for the Ghana 2008 tournament any negative image about the country.
Briefing DAILY GUIDE, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Ashanti Regional Police Command, Inspector Yusif Mohammed Tanko said people erroneously believe that soliciting for sex was not a crime, stressing that the act is an offense in this country.

He noted that the police would continue to deal with anyone caught in the act, adding that there was no excuse for anybody to sell her body for the mere reason that she is in financial difficulties.

Inspector Tanko said people have to engage in legitimate businesses to earn a living and avoid the attitude of getting rich overnight.

He assured the general public that the police would be careful when it comes to arresting real prostitutes in the country, saying the police in Kumasi would arrest both males and females who would be caught in the prostitution business next time in their operation. From Stella Danso,
