Media personality Baaba Cann has expressed disappointment over the suspension of cultural welcome performances at Ghana's airports, arguing that the decision could undermine efforts to promote the country's tourism industry and showcase its rich cultural heritage.

Speaking during a discussion on the cancellation of the cultural welcomes, Baaba Cann questioned the decision, particularly at a time when Ghana is seeking to attract more international visitors and position itself as a leading tourism destination.

She argued that cultural performances at airports offer visitors a memorable first impression of a country and provide an opportunity to introduce them to its traditions, identity and heritage immediately upon arrival.

Baaba Cann further drew a comparison with New Zealand, where Māori cultural traditions are used to welcome visitors and dignitaries through traditional ceremonies and performances.

She referred to the Pōwhiri, a traditional Māori welcoming ceremony, which includes the Haka Pōwhiri — a ceremonial dance performed to welcome visitors. The ceremony is an important expression of Māori identity, hospitality and cultural heritage. New Zealand +2

According to her, watching videos of such cultural welcomes often moves her to tears, adding that the experience alone inspires her to choose New Zealand whenever she considers travelling.

She questioned why Ghana, a country blessed with diverse cultural traditions, would limit such opportunities to showcase its heritage at a time when it should be using every available platform to attract tourists.

The Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL), in its February 10, 2026 notice, cautioned that cultural displays, including drumming, dancing, singing, chanting and ululations, would require prior approval from airport management. The company explained that the directive was intended to address disruptions to airport operations and passenger movement.

For her, cultural welcomes should not simply be viewed as entertainment but as an opportunity to give visitors a memorable first impression of Ghana and demonstrate the country's cultural richness.

Note: The Māori Pōwhiri is traditionally a formal welcome ceremony, often held at a marae or during official engagements. The Haka Pōwhiri is the specific welcome dance within that tradition; it is not necessarily a routine performance for every passenger arriving at a New Zealand airport.
