Co-Chair of the New Patriotic Party's (NPP) Energy Committee, Kwadwo Nsafoah Poku, has called for the dismissal of Interior Minister Mohammed Muntaka-Mubarak and the head of the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) over what he describes as failures in Ghana's fight against drug trafficking.
According to him, recent cocaine seizures involving consignments linked to Ghana, including an interception in Lebanon, raise serious questions about the effectiveness of the country's security and narcotics enforcement systems.
Speaking on The Big Issue on Channel One TV on Saturday, November 7, Mr Nsafoah Poku argued that the repeated interceptions suggest the possible existence of organised networks facilitating the movement of narcotics through Ghana.
He maintained that the scale and frequency of the seizures warrant accountability at the highest levels of the country's security architecture, insisting that the response should extend beyond the arrest of individual suspects.
“The only reason why the Lebanon cocaine seizure happened is that there is a network of people working around that delivery. So now, when we say that the security system needs to be held accountable, not only does Muntaka have to be sacked, but the NACOC head also has to be sacked because, aside from arresting individuals, we have not raided any warehouse.
“We have not seen any cocaine in anybody's room, and it is unheard of that today Ghana is shipping out cocaine in large quantities. Today, we have gotten to the point where somebody is walking through our international airport with over 20 kilogrammes of cocaine, and that tells you the amount of cocaine in this country,” he said.
His comments follow reports of cocaine interceptions involving consignments linked to Ghana at international destinations, including Australia, Dunkirk, Beirut, and Lebanon.
