President John Dramani Mahama has paid tribute to veteran Ghanaian actress Grace Naa Kwarley Nortey, describing her as a legendary figure whose contributions to the creative arts industry will continue to inspire generations.
In a tribute delivered on his behalf by the Vice President's Spokesperson, Ama Pratt, at the actress' burial service, President Mahama said Ghana had lost an icon whose legacy would endure through her remarkable performances and the many artists she inspired.
He noted that Mrs Nortey dedicated more than five decades to entertaining Ghanaians through theatre, television, film, and radio, earning her place among the country's most celebrated performers.
According to the President, she belonged to the pioneering generation of actors who gave Ghanaian storytelling its voice and dignity, using their craft to reflect the values, struggles, and resilience of Ghanaian families.
President Mahama also highlighted her contribution to radio broadcasting, recalling her role as host of Nyeawokoshie, a programme for Ghanaian women in the 1970s that connected with and influenced countless listeners.
He said her impact extended beyond the screen and stage, with many contemporary actors and actresses acknowledging the inspiration, guidance, and mentorship they received from her. He described her as a teacher, mentor, and mother figure to many within the creative arts industry.
The President extended the condolences of the government and people of Ghana to her family, friends, and the wider creative arts community, while calling for greater efforts to recognise and support pioneers in the industry during their lifetime.
Grace Nortey, affectionately known as Maame Dzata, passed away on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, at the age of 89. Her distinguished career spanned theatre, television, film, and radio, leaving an enduring mark on Ghana's creative arts landscape.
