The Member of Parliament for Wa West, Mr Peter Lanchene Toobu, has described Ghana's electronic traffic enforcement system, TraffiTech, as long overdue, urging motorists not to panic over its implementation.
Speaking on The Big Issue on Channel One TV on Saturday, November 7, Mr Toobu said the system should have been introduced years ago, noting that it had undergone an extensive pilot phase and public education campaign before its rollout.
“TraffiTech ought to have started many years ago, but here it is now and we have consummated it into the law and gradually rolled it out on November 1. It was piloted from May up to October and then, following appeals, an additional month was dedicated to public education.
“They are starting with just speeding, and a lot of people are getting scared, but they shouldn't be overly worried. We are beginning with one offence, speeding,” he said.
TraffiTech is designed to support the enforcement of road traffic regulations through technology, reducing reliance on manual policing and enabling authorities to identify motorists who violate traffic laws.
The system was piloted between May and October before its full rollout on November 1. An additional month was later allocated for public education to give motorists more time to familiarise themselves with its operation.
