The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has announced plans to temporarily close some roads within the Central Business District (CBD) in December to create additional trading space for traders ahead of the Christmas festivities.
Speaking to traders during the November edition of the National Sanitation Exercise, the Mayor of Accra, Mr Michael Kpakpo Allotey, said the initiative is intended to support traders without permanent shops by providing them with space to sell their goods and increase their earnings during the festive season.
He disclosed that roads stretching from the Cocoa Board area to Kantamanto would be closed as part of the arrangement, following a directive from the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mr Mahama Ayariga.
Mr Allotey urged traders to take full advantage of the opportunity to boost their sales during the Christmas period.
“We want you to make more sales this December than you have ever done. The Local Government Minister has asked us to block some of the roads to create space for traders who do not have shops to sell their goods. The stretch from Cocoa Board to Kantamanto will be closed,” he said.
Traders Ordered to Vacate Bus Stops
Meanwhile, the Mayor has directed traders operating at bus stops within the metropolis to vacate those spaces by Monday to facilitate the smooth movement of vehicles and pedestrians.
He stressed the need to keep public transport corridors free from obstruction as part of efforts to improve traffic flow and enhance safety in the city.
