The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has announced stringent electoral and security measures to prevent disturbances during its upcoming regional executive elections, with the police-led National Election Security Task Force taking charge of security arrangements.
The party's Deputy Director of Elections and IT, Tanko Rashid Computer, said the measures were designed to ensure peaceful and orderly elections.
His comments come as the party prepares for its Northern Regional elections, with the Northern Regional Police Command reportedly planning to deploy 400 personnel to maintain law and order during the exercise.
Mr Rashid Computer said the party had engaged its regional election committees, aspirants, candidates and their supporters to familiarise them with the rules and procedures governing the polls.
He disclosed that proxy voting would not be allowed and that the party would strictly adhere to the Electoral Commission's prescribed voting hours, from 7:00 am to 5:00 pm.
“We are not going to exercise any proxy voting in this election. We are going to go strictly by the Electoral Commission dictate, starting from 7:00 in the morning and ending by 5,” he said.
On security, he explained that the NDC had handed responsibility for maintaining order during the elections to the National Election Security Task Force, which is headed by the Ghana Police Service.
“We are also deferring the security of the election to the National Election Security Task Force headed by the police. I mean, so they are handling the issue of security,” he stated.
He further cautioned that access to the conference grounds would be restricted to accredited members, warning that unauthorised persons who attempt to enter the premises would face action from security personnel.
“If you are not an accredited member to the conference, you have no business coming to the conference ground. Otherwise, you will have problems with the security,” he cautioned.
