Ghana recorded 53,415 adolescent pregnancies between January and July 2026, including 1,501 among girls aged 10 to 14, according to Ghana Health Service (GHS) data.
The figure comes from the Service's routine Health Information System. It counts pregnancies recorded at health facilities, not every pregnancy in the country.
The scale. GHS says this works out to about 7,000 pregnancies a month among girls aged 15 to 19.That is close to the annual national burden of more than 100,000 adolescent pregnancies in national estimates.
For comparison, the 2022 Ghana Demographic and Health Survey found that 15.2% of girls aged 15 to 19 had ever been pregnant.
Regional gaps. The burden is uneven. The Savannah Region recorded 117.5 births per 1,000 adolescent girls, above the Sub-Saharan African average of 104.
The Upper East Region recorded more than 2,400 adolescent pregnancies in the first five months, about 520 of them in the Bongo District. In the Bole District of the Savannah Region, 230 births per 1,000 were recorded among girls aged 18 to 19.
Causes. Officials and advocates point to several linked drivers. Girls who are out of school have significantly higher rates of pregnancy than those in school, so keeping girls in school is central to reducing it.
MSI Reproductive Choices Ghana ties teenage pregnancy to education, access to information and services, gender and social norms, and poverty.
Graphic Online's own report highlights violence against girls and the lack of sex education . Commentators also raise online exploitation, and call for attention to the adult men behind the pregnancies .
What the 10 to 14 figure means. The 1,501 cases involve children. GHS has asked for particular attention to this group, saying such pregnancies raise health, education and child-protection concerns.A child-protection response is therefore needed alongside the health response.
Response so far. GHS has run the "Safety Net" intervention since 2017, which supports pregnant adolescents and helps them return to school with the Ghana Education Service. GHS says the main challenge is not a lack of policies. Existing interventions are not always effectively implemented, coordinated and adequately resourced.
A note on the figures. The GHS count covers January to July 2026, which is seven months. Graphic's social-media summary calls this the "first half" of the year, so the seven-month wording should be preferred. Regional figures also use different measures (births per 1,000, share of girls, raw counts), so they should not be compared directly.
