Deputy Director of Elections and IT of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Rashid Tanko Computer, has attributed the apparent increase in drug trafficking cases linked to Ghana to what he describes as the government's intensified fight against narcotics.
He argued that the rising public attention surrounding drug seizures and arrests does not necessarily mean the problem has worsened but rather reflects the government's decision to make its anti-drug operations more visible.
Tanko Computer said the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration failed to adequately tackle drug trafficking, allowing criminal activities to go largely unnoticed.
Speaking on Accra-based Metro TV's Good Morning Ghana on Thursday, November 5, he urged the media and the opposition to support the government's efforts instead of criticising the recent developments.
"Now government is fighting it head on, because we are fighting it and we are bringing the media along with the fight. They say it's now what prevalent. Is that not it?" he asked.
His comments follow questions about the recent seizure of 46.7 kilogrammes of cocaine at the Rafic Hariri International Airport in Beirut, Lebanon, involving a passenger who travelled from Accra.
The seizure occurred on Saturday, October 31, when Lebanese Customs officials arrested a Syrian national arriving from Ghana with the cocaine concealed in two pieces of luggage.
The Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) subsequently announced that the arrest resulted from a coordinated controlled-delivery operation involving Ghanaian and Lebanese drug enforcement authorities.
Three foreign nationals, comprising a Syrian, a Tunisian and a Lebanese, were subsequently arrested in Ghana on Tuesday, November 3, in connection with the shipment.
