The National Communications Director of the United Party, Solomon Owusu, has criticised the New Patriotic Party (NPP) over what he describes as its approach to opposition politics.
He stated that the party may lose public credibility through its constant opposition to government actions.
According to him, the NPP's approach to political advocacy could make Ghanaians disregard its concerns, even when it raises legitimate issues requiring public attention.
He said the party appeared to oppose government decisions indiscriminately because it had assumed the role of an opposition party.
Speaking on Accra-based JoyNews' AM Show on Thursday, November 5, Owusu cautioned that the party's conduct could undermine its ability to hold the government accountable.
"Matters that are not supposed to be opposed, you oppose it, and they are becoming by the day irrelevant to the political discourse of our country," he said.
He argued that the danger is that the NPP could eventually uncover a genuine case of wrongdoing but struggle to convince the public because of the credibility it had lost through its previous criticisms.
"The danger with that is that a time will come; they would have legitimate cause. They would have uncovered a serious infraction. That time they will be speaking and nobody will take them serious," he added.
The UP spokesperson also used the opportunity to explain why the United Party had adopted what he described as a cautious approach to criticising the government.
He said his party prefers to investigate issues and establish the facts before making public statements, rather than joining what he described as political propaganda.
