Former New Patriotic Party (NPP) running mate in the 2024 elections, Dr Matthew Opoku-Prempeh, has urged authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into allegations of rape and sexual abuse involving the headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School.
He stressed the need for accountability through due process and called for the protection and support of students who have come forward with accounts of alleged abuse.
Dr Opoku-Prempeh made the call in a social media post marking the International Day against Violence and Bullying at School, including Cyberbullying.
The former Education Minister said schools must ensure that reports of harm by students trigger appropriate action, with clearly defined responsibilities for protection, investigation and follow-up.
“We must examine what happens after a student reports harm. A complaint must lead to action, with clear responsibility for protection, investigation and follow-up,” he stated.
He also emphasised the importance of establishing reliable reporting systems and measures to protect students from retaliation.
“Schools need trusted reporting channels, safeguards against retaliation and access to appropriate care. Parents and students must be able to raise concerns without fear of humiliation or pressure to remain silent,” he added.

A child’s journey to school should lead to learning, friendship, and opportunity, with the assurance that their safety matters.
The death of 15-year-old Javits Frimpong, who was fatally shot while travelling to school in New York, is heartbreaking. My thoughts and prayers are with his parents, family and school community. His father’s account of bullying concerns deserves serious attention as investigators establish the circumstances of his death.
Here in Ghana, the allegations of rape and sexual abuse involving the headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School are deeply disturbing. Students must be protected from abuse, including by those entrusted with their education and care. The allegations require thorough investigation and accountability through due process, alongside protection and support for those who have come forward.
As we mark the International Day against Violence and Bullying at School, including Cyberbullying, we must examine what happens after a student reports harm. A complaint must lead to action, with clear responsibility for protection, investigation and follow-up.
Schools need trusted reporting channels, safeguards against retaliation and access to appropriate care. Parents and students must be able to raise concerns without fear of humiliation or pressure to remain silent.
Every learner deserves safety and dignity. May Javits rest in peace, and may his family receive comfort and justice.
