St John's, Antigua and Barbuda: Ghana's President, John Dramani Mahama, has held talks with British Prime Minister Andy Burnham on the sidelines of the 2026 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM). The photograph carries The Presidency's watermark, with the Ghanaian and British flags behind the two leaders.
A first meeting in a new setting
The 2026 summit is President Mahama's first CHOGM since his re-election in December 2024. For Mr Burnham, it is an early test on the international stage. He became prime minister on 20 July 2026, the UK's seventh in a decade.
LBC reported that Mr Burnham said the UK wanted to "work closely with" partners as he met the Ghanaian president for one-to-one talks on the sidelines of the summit.
What hangs over the summit
The talks took place against a charged backdrop. The summit was expected to be dominated by the issue of a slavery apology and reparations. Mr Burnham refused to commit to further UK financial contributions to the Commonwealth, after a row over slavery reparations loomed over the meeting.
The UK has also proposed a "debt reset" aimed at helping poorer countries struggling with repayments. Debt relief and reparations are both live questions for Ghana, which has been a prominent voice in the African reparations campaign and is still rebuilding its finances after its debt restructuring.
Why the meeting matters for Ghana
The UK remains one of Ghana's major trading partners and sources of investment. Ghana will want to know how the new government's Commonwealth approach affects trade, investment, debt and development financing. The summit's own theme, "Accelerating Partnerships and Investment for a Prosperous Commonwealth," fits that agenda well.
What to watch
The sources I found do not detail what the two leaders agreed. The test will be follow-through: concrete commitments on trade, investment and debt, and a clearer UK position on reparations.
