Tamale Senior High School (Tamasco) has emerged as the winner of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) Inter-School Quiz competition in the Northern Region after narrowly beating two other schools in a closely contested final.

Tamasco scored 43 points to secure the top position at the competition held on Monday; Tamale Girls Senior High School (PagNaa) came second with 41 points, while Tolon Senior High School placed third with 39 points.

The competition tested students’ knowledge of the NHIS, including its history, benefit package, members’ rights and responsibilities, and the role of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA).

Participants also demonstrated their understanding of the Authority’s digital innovations, such as the MyNHIS App, *929#, and the One-Time Attendance Code (OTAC), as well as the Free Primary Health Care programme and channels available to members for resolving concerns at health facilities.

All three participating schools received cash prizes, certificates of participation and other NHIS souvenirs in recognition of their performance.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Northern Regional Director of the NHIA, Mr. Alhassan Abdulai, encouraged the students to give their best and represent their respective schools and the region with pride.

The GES Northern Regional Schools Health Education Programme (SHEP) Coordinator, Hajia Khadija Alhassan, commended the NHIA Executive Management for introducing the health literacy ambassador’s initiative, describing it as an important partnership between the health and education sectors.

She said the competition went beyond testing students’ knowledge, providing an opportunity to build a generation that understands health financing, social protection, and the principle of solidarity, through which collective contributions help protect vulnerable members of society.

Hajia Alhassan noted that health literacy was closely linked to the educational goal of producing informed and responsible citizens.

“A healthy child learns better, a healthy teacher teaches better, and a healthy nation builds better,” she said, adding that the initiative would help students carry important health information to their homes and communities.
