The Women’s Wing of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is set to stage a peaceful demonstration in Obuasi on Friday, November 6, to demand justice for 19 students allegedly sexually abused by the headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS).
The demonstration will be led by the party’s National Women’s Organiser, Mavis Hawa Koomson, who says the protest is intended to show solidarity with the victims and their families.
The NPP Women’s Wing is also demanding a comprehensive investigation into the allegations, including possible failures by school authorities and other officials who may have been aware of the reported abuse.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, November 3, Hawa Koomson said the reported incidents raise serious concerns about the failure of institutions responsible for protecting students.
She stressed that the investigation should not be limited to the headmaster but should also examine the conduct of school authorities, the District Chief Executive and the District Director of Education.
“The actions and inactions of the School authorities, the District Chief Executives, the District Directors of Education must all be scrutinised. This must be expanded to include previous schools the headmaster has taught,” she stated.
“We will not allow this to be swept under the carpet. We are formally requesting constant update from the investigating authorities. We want answers. The public wants answers,” she said.
The planned demonstration comes amid public concern over allegations of sexual abuse involving the 19 students and the school's headmaster, Zakaria Abdulai.
The statement also called on Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang to intervene, insisting that the matter should be treated as a national child protection concern rather than a partisan political issue.
