A suspected illegal miner has been killed and another injured following a shootout between security operatives and a group of miners in the Atiwa Forest Reserve.
Four other suspects, comprising 3 Malians and a Ghanaian, were arrested during the operation, which was carried out under Operation GREEN SHIELD by the Anti-Small-Scale Mining Operations Brigade (ASOB).
According to the operational account, the security team advanced about 10 kilometres into the forest after drone surveillance identified a suspected illegal mining site.
During a foot patrol that lasted from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., the operatives encountered approximately 50 suspected illegal miners at the location.
Some of the miners reportedly fled after noticing the security personnel, while others allegedly opened fire on the team, leading to an exchange of gunfire.
The confrontation left one suspected miner dead and another with gunshot injuries. Security personnel recovered 2 pump-action guns and 6 rounds of ammunition at the scene.
The injured suspect was given first aid before being taken to the Kyebi Government Hospital for further medical attention.
The 4 arrested suspects have since been handed over to the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) for further action.
No security personnel were injured during the operation.
