The Wingat Care Foundation has come to the aid of Bugwia Primary School in the Garu District of the Upper East Region after a video of pupils lying on their bellies to learn went viral on social media.
The Foundation, which operates under the motto "Touching Lives, Transforming Futures," donated furniture and learning materials to the school to improve teaching and learning.
Items presented included a teacher's table, plastic chairs, books, crayons, pencils, and erasers.
Presenting the items to the Ghana Education Service (GES) in Garu, the Director of Cooperations for the Wingat Care Foundation, Norbert Winbora Akparibo, said the Foundation was moved after watching the heartbreaking video of pupils learning on the floor.
He said the Foundation is new but has plans to work closely with the Garu District Education Directorate to support more deprived schools in the district.
Receiving the items on behalf of the District Directorate, Mr. Albert Ayem commended the Foundation for the gesture.
He said government alone cannot meet all the needs of schools and called on NGOs and philanthropic organizations to support education delivery.
The Headteacher of Bugwia Primary School, who received the items from the GES representative, expressed deep gratitude to the Wingat Care Foundation for the timely intervention.
He disclosed that the school, established in 1960, has never seen any major renovation and is currently on the verge of collapse, with walls and doors hanging loosely and parts of the roof ripped off.
He added that while the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) has been doing its best, it is not enough, and appealed to government, NGOs, and well-meaning individuals to help renovate the school.
