The Managing Director of Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL), Yvonne Nana Afriyie Opare, has said the entry of Uganda Airlines into Ghana is expected to boost trade, tourism and economic cooperation between the two countries.
She said the new route would improve air connectivity between East and West Africa and also give travellers more options and strengthen Ghana’s ambition to become a preferred aviation hub in the subregion.
Mrs Opare made the remarks at a ceremony to welcome the inaugural Uganda Airlines flight to Accra on Tuesday, October 27.
“We are particularly delighted by Uganda Airlines’ decision to operate the Entebbe–Lagos–Accra route, a clear demonstration of confidence in Ghana’s aviation industry and a strong endorsement of the collective efforts being made to position Ghana as the preferred aviation hub and leader in airport business within the West African subregion,” she said.
She described the airline’s entry into Ghana as a significant milestone in relations between the two countries, noting that the service was expected to stimulate tourism, promote cultural exchange, facilitate trade and strengthen economic ties.
Mrs Opare also said Ghana continues to record significant passenger and aircraft movements from East Africa, with established flight operations from Rwanda, Tanzania, Ethiopia and Kenya.
She expressed confidence that Uganda Airlines’ entry would further improve competition in the aviation sector, offering passengers greater choice, better connectivity, competitive fares and enhanced services.
The GACL managing director said the company remains committed to investing in airport infrastructure, operational efficiency, innovation and service improvements to meet the growing needs of airlines and travellers.
She assured Uganda Airlines of the company’s continued support to ensure seamless airport operations, reliable flight schedules and efficient passenger facilitation.
“Together, through strong partnership and collaboration, we can enhance the attractiveness of our international airport and establish it as the preferred gateway for travellers across the region,” she added.
