“You can have everything in life you want, if you will just help other people get what they want.” – Zig ZIGLAR
Apewe Learns The Finger Proverb
Apewe wants to cultivate 10 acres of maize. He says, “I can do it alone.”
He tries. Planting takes weeks instead of days. Weeds overtake the farm. Yield is poor – harvest is poor.
A wise elder tells him: “One finger cannot pick louse – one hand needs all fingers!”
Apewe becomes wiser. The next farming season comes. This time he seeks communal labour. He engages friends, youth, and women – and the farm succeeds. He’s excited with a bumper harvest. His family has enough to eat. He helps the needy.
In Manyoro, no one builds a house alone. Community helps. It is the same with success. Achieving success requires collaboration with others. No significant achievement can be made single-handedly.
Why is unemployment getting worse in Ghana? Graduates outstrip jobs. Many have no meaningful connections – no networking.
You can clinch success just where you are. Leverage your connections with people. People are your diamonds. Be willing to help people and people will be willing to help you.
Success is not about money, it is about people. This was the principle of success Carnegie taught.
WHY GHANA YOUTH FAIL TO GET HELP – 5 Mistakes
- Pride – “I can do alone!” Wrong step. Apewe tried and failed. The recalcitrant goat gets eaten by hyena!
- Selfish -Getter, not giver Looking only to your interest but not the interest of others is selfishness. Learn to give. It is in giving that we receive.
- Shy -Don’t ask. Asking is a powerful tool that is least used. The Bible counsels: Ask, believe, and receive. Youth don’t want skills but money. Skills pay! Get mentored, money will come. Unfortunately youth feel shy to seek mentors – remain unskilled and poor.
- Wrong People If you want information, ask a credible source. If you are sick, ask a doctor, not a meat seller. If you want riches, don’t ask Poor Dad, ask Rich Dad.
- No Value What value can you add to people’s lives? You go to the chief with empty hands – why should the chief help you? What do you bring? Nothing will come of nothing!
7 DIAMONDS – HOW TO GET PEOPLE TO HELP YOU SUCCEED {Simplified for Ghana}.
- Become Interested In People First {Carnegie Golden Rule}
Carnegie’s wisdom: “Become genuinely interested in other people.” They will be more than willing to help you in return.
Manyoro wisdom: Need help? Ask about their farm, family, health before asking help.
Apewe drills a borehole for a gardener. Gardener offers Apewe land to farm.
ACTION: This week ask 5 people about their problem – listen attentively, don’t talk about yourself.
- Give Before You Ask: Ziglar said it well “Help others get what they want, you get what you want.”
In Manyoro, a hunter who shares meat to neighbours eats meat all year round.
I give free wisdom through my articles. Modern Ghana helps by publishing them – giving brings help.
Kiyosaki says: “The rich give value first.”
ACTION: What can you give free? Is it your labour, knowledge, smile, connection? Giving starts receiving!
- Ask Clearly, Humbly, Specifically {Ask=Receive}
How will a mother know a child is hungry who will not cry?
A young man says, “Help me.” This is senseless! Better: “Uncle, I want to learn how to rear birds. Mentor me for 6 months! I am ready to pay the price.” Be humble when asking.
ACTION: Write one clear ask: Who, what, when?
- Find A Need And Fill It – People Help Helpers { Conwell, Ziglar}
Conwell says, “find a need and fill it – people will help you.
Ziglar said: “You can have everything in life you want, if you will just help other people get what they want.” When you help people get what they want, they will help you get what you want.
Manyoro needs development – shops, sanitation facilities, Senior High School, community centres etc. Help Manyoro, Manyoro helps you.
People help those who help community – chiefs, teachers, nurses, assemblymen etc.
ACTION: How does your success help Manyoro? Tell people!
5.Build Your Manyoro Network – Chief, Teacher, Market Woman
The rich build networks. Networking helps them become richer, so help others.
Manyoro proverb: “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.”
Manyoro youth need to network. Don’t limit this to your age mates only – include elders, women, farmers, teachers – each has different diamond {expertise, skills, talent}.
My 200+ articles would not have been possible but for my network of readers, editors, youth – that is net worth.
ACTION: List 10 people in Manyoro of different ages and different jobs to be on your success board.
6.- Show Appreciation
Be swift to express gratitude for every help you receive. Thank you brings more help.
Carnegie advocates honest and sincere appreciation.
Manyoro values appreciation. Thanks make people feel important and valued. They feel like helping again.
If youth forget to thank helper, helper says, “Never again.”
ACTION: Thank your helper in 3 ways: Words, small gift, tell others he helped.
7 – Keep Faith – Endure Darkness, Keep Relationships.
Mandino advises, “Love light – shows the way, endure darkness – shows stars.” Help is coming.
Sometimes helpers disappoint. Don’t burn bridges. Help delayed is not help denied. Keep humble as you maintain relationships.
ACTION: Who helped you before? Visit them this week. It is a way of renewing ties.
MANYORO HELP TEST – 7 Questions
- Who have you helped this month?
- Who can mentor you in farming, hunting, writing, business?
- What clear help do you need – write it?
- What value will you give before asking?
- Have you thanked your last helper?
- Who is in your success network?
- Are you alone finger or full hand?
COMMON MISTAKES – Why People Don’t Help
- You never help others. You are selfish.
- Your request is vague – not specific.
- You ask the wrong person – no capacity to help.
- You don’t appreciate!
- You disappear after help.
CONCLUSION – Manyoro Together Challenge
Challenge: 30 Days – People Are Diamonds. Each day, help one, ask one, thank one.
Call-to-Action: Make the world less difficult for others.
