Founding Partner of Robert Smith Law Group, Bobby Banson, has criticised what he describes as the growing influence of partisan politics on national discourse, arguing that blind loyalty to political parties is undermining independent thinking.
He said Ghanaians increasingly approach national issues based on how their preferred political parties stand to benefit rather than what is in the country’s best interest.
In a social media post on Tuesday, October 27, the legal practitioner compared the influence of partisan politics to colonial rule, noting that political allegiance had become a form of control over citizens’ thinking.
“Partisan politics is worse than colonialisation. We cannot discuss any national issue without thinking first about how our ‘party’ can benefit from it,” he wrote.
Banson further expressed concern that people once trusted to provide independent thought and leadership are increasingly allowing party loyalty to shape their positions on national matters.
He described blind loyalty to political parties as a new form of enslavement, arguing that it prevents citizens from objectively assessing issues that affect the country.
“The new slave master is blind loyalty to partisan politics,” he stated.
His comments come amid continuing political debates in Ghana, where public discussions on national issues often reflect divisions between supporters of the governing party and the opposition.
