The Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) has created more than 8,000 direct and indirect jobs for Ghanaians through its recovery and restoration efforts, Managing Director Edmond Kombat has disclosed.
Speaking at the Government Accountability Series on Monday, October 26, Mr Kombat said the refinery’s return to operations had opened up employment opportunities for young engineers, temporary workers, local contractors and other players in the downstream petroleum sector.
He said TOR currently has 415 young engineers in permanent positions, alongside 301 temporary workers engaged in activities related to the refinery’s operations.
Mr Kombat added that 67 workers had been employed for maintenance works on the Residue Fluid Catalytic Cracker (RFCC), while 654 people were working with 35 local contractors operating at the refinery.
Beyond the direct employment created at the facility, he said the restoration had generated indirect jobs for approximately 6,500 people, including tanker drivers and other workers whose livelihoods depend on activities in the downstream petroleum industry.
According to him, the employment figures highlight the broader economic impact of restoring TOR, particularly in providing opportunities for young professionals and supporting workers across the petroleum value chain.
“The recovery has created a number of jobs, and sometimes we wonder where these people would have been if TOR had not come back, In effect, direct employment for 1,557 young Ghanaian engineers having employed as a result of restoration and reset. We’ve also created jobs of about 6,500 indirectly for tanker drivers and other workers in the downstream,” he said.
