The Director-General of the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), Major-General Paul Seidu Tanye-Kulono, has called on management, staff and industry stakeholders to build on the achievements of the past 40 years and leave behind a stronger institution capable of serving future generations.

He said the Authority’s 40th anniversary was an opportunity to reflect on its history, recognise the contributions of past and present leaders and renew its commitment to improving port operations and supporting Ghana’s economic development.

Addressing guests at the GPHA 40th Anniversary Dinner and Awards Night, Major-General Tanye-Kulono said the institution’s progress had been shaped by the collective efforts of successive administrations, employees, government representatives and partners across the maritime and logistics industry.

He noted that the milestone represented more than four decades of operations, highlighting the vision, sacrifices and partnerships that had sustained the Authority in its role in Ghana’s trade and economic development.

“The GPHA of today is the product of years of hard work, difficult decisions, bold initiatives and collective sacrifice. Every chapter of our history has contributed to the institution we proudly celebrate tonight. Our story is one of collective achievement, and this anniversary belongs to everyone who has played a part in shaping it,” he said.

The Director-General paid tribute to former Directors of the Authority, acknowledging their leadership and contributions to its development at different stages of its history.

He also expressed appreciation to past and present sector ministers, the Governing Board, regulatory agencies, terminal operators, shipping lines, freight forwarders, transport operators, customers and other industry partners for their continued support.

According to him, the development of Ghana’s ports depended on effective collaboration among stakeholders throughout the maritime and logistics value chain, adding that the success of the Authority was closely linked to the businesses and communities that relied on its services.

Major-General Tanye-Kulono further commended current and former employees for their dedication, saying their contributions had sustained operations, strengthened the Authority’s reputation and supported its continued service to the country.

He said the anniversary celebration also provided an opportunity to recognise individuals and organisations whose work had contributed to the growth of the maritime industry.

Congratulating the award recipients, he described the honours as an expression of appreciation for their commitment and contributions to the sector, while urging them to maintain high standards and strengthen collaboration.

He added that the achievements being celebrated were the result of collective effort and that professionalism, improved service delivery and effective partnerships remained important to the industry’s continued progress.

Looking ahead, the GPHA boss said the Authority must draw lessons from its history while embracing innovation and finding better ways of working to remain competitive and meet future demands.

“Our responsibility is to build on the foundations laid by previous generations and leave behind an institution that is stronger, more competitive and better equipped to serve future generations.

“That responsibility belongs to all of us,” he said.

He stressed that the next phase of the Authority’s development would require a shared commitment from management, staff and industry partners to consolidate past gains and strengthen the institution’s capacity to serve Ghana and its neighbours.

Major-General Tanye-Kulono expressed gratitude to guests for participating in the anniversary dinner, describing the occasion as an opportunity to strengthen professional relationships, reconnect with colleagues and celebrate the partnerships that had sustained the Authority over the years.

He expressed optimism that the next 40 years would bring greater innovation, stronger partnerships and improved efficiency, enabling the GPHA to make an even greater contribution to Ghana’s economic development and the prosperity of other West African countries.

“Let us celebrate our legacy, honour our champions and continue building a future worthy of the generations to come,” he said.
