The Palace of the Paramount Chief and President of the Nandom Traditional Area has announced the indefinite postponement of the much-anticipated 2026 Kakube Festival, one of Ghana's most revered harvest and cultural celebrations.

In a statement issued from the Palace on Friday, October 17, 2026, signed by His Royal Majesty, Naa Professor Edmund Nminyem Delle Chiir VIII, Paramount Chief of the Nandom Traditional Area, and copied to the Modern Ghana News in Accra, he urged the public to disregard any unofficial dates circulating on social media.

The statement said the Nandom Traditional Council wishes to inform the people of Nandom, the Dagara community worldwide, and the general public that the 2026 edition of the festival will not be held as scheduled.

The statement noted that the decision was taken in view of prevailing circumstances that make it necessary to defer the celebration.

"His Royal Majesty regrets any inconvenience this development may cause to the people of Nandom, traditional authorities, invited guests, stakeholders, visitors, and all those who were looking forward to participating in this year's festival," the release stated.

The Kakube Festival is not merely a durbar. It is the spiritual and cultural heartbeat of the Nandom people.

The name "Kakube" translates as "showing of the harvest" or "sign of a fruitful year." Historically rooted in thanksgiving to family gods, ancestors, and the Almighty for protection, guidance, and bumper harvest throughout the farming season, the festival marks the end of the farming cycle and the beginning of a season of renewal.

Over decades, it has evolved into an international cultural pillar—a vibrant tapestry of the famous Gyil (wooden xylophone), the energetic Bawa and Dagara dances, the display of smocks, pito brewing, farm produce, and storytelling that rekindles family ties, reunites the diaspora, and preserves Dagara identity for future generations.

The festival also serves as a critical platform for development dialogue, education, and social cohesion, attracting tourists, government officials, diplomats, and cultural enthusiasts to Nandom each November.

His Royal Majesty expressed sincere appreciation for the continued support, understanding, and cooperation of the people of Nandom and all well-wishers of the festival.

He respectfully advised the public to take note of the announcement and await further communication regarding a new date for the celebration, stressing that any subsequent updates will be communicated only through appropriate and official channels of the Palace.

In a message of cultural reassurance, the Paramount Chief appealed to all concerned to remain calm, exercise patience, and continue to uphold the unity, peace, and cultural heritage that the Kakube Festival represents.

"The Kakube is about peace, thanksgiving, and togetherness. Even in postponement, we must live its values," a senior palace source told this portal.

The Palace concluded by sincerely regretting any inconvenience caused to traditional authorities, invited guests, stakeholders, hoteliers, traders, performing groups, and the thousands of sons and daughters of Nandom in the diaspora who were preparing to travel home for the celebration.

The 2026 Kakube Festival was expected to be one of the largest in recent years, following months of preparations.
