The Upper East Regional Police Command has reported the death of a 20-year-old suspected armed robber, Muntari Munumi, following his arrest at Sapeliga, where an M16 A2 assault rifle and ammunition were retrieved.
According to a police statement, Munumi was arrested after allegedly attacking two people who were returning home from work in Bazua.
The victims were reportedly ambushed at Sapeliga Junction in Kobore, where the suspect allegedly robbed them of a Royal motorbike, three mobile phones and GH¢1,820 in cash.
The victims are said to have struggled with the suspect and managed to seize his weapon after he fired several rounds but missed his target.
They subsequently contacted the Googo Neighbourhood Watch Committee, which mobilised its members, arrested the suspect and handed him over to the police along with the weapon.
The police said the items retrieved included an M16 A2 assault rifle, three live rounds of ammunition and five spent shells.
During preliminary investigations, Munumi reportedly disclosed the names of his alleged accomplices and identified his source of weapon supply. He also agreed to lead a police team to arrest them.
However, while the team was on its way, he complained of dizziness and suddenly lost consciousness.
He was rushed to a nearby hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival. His body has since been deposited at the morgue for preservation and autopsy.
The police said efforts were ongoing to arrest the alleged accomplices to face the law.
The Upper East Regional Police Command commended the victims, the Googo Neighbourhood Watch Committee and the Chief of Sapeliga for their support in the arrest.
