The Member of Parliament for Akuapem North, Sammi Awuku, has called for the strict enforcement of child protection policies in schools amid concerns over reported cases of sexual abuse involving students.
He urged newly trained teachers to prioritise the safety of children entrusted to their care and called for prompt investigations into reported cases of abuse.
Mr Awuku made the call in a social media on Thursday, October 22, after he attended the 18th Graduation Ceremony of the Presbyterian College of Education at Akropong-Akuapem a day earlier.
The ceremony also marked the graduation of a new cohort of teachers.
The lawmaker stressed the need for teachers to protect pupils and students from abuse rather than become perpetrators themselves.
“With the recent rise in reported cases of sexual abuse in some of our schools, the occasion could not have come at a better time to remind these newly trained teachers of the responsibility they carry in protecting the children entrusted to their care,” he stated.
His comments come amid public concern over allegations of sexual abuse involving students at Obuasi Senior High Technical School, where the headmaster has been accused of misconduct.
Sammi Awuku condemned acts of sexual abuse in schools and urged students to report such incidents without fear or intimidation.
He also called for every reported case to be investigated promptly and thoroughly, with those found culpable facing the appropriate consequences.
“Our schools must be safe places for every child to learn and grow,” he added.
